Which Character Should You Play in Crimson Desert?

Crimson Desert doesn't have a class selection screen like a traditional RPG. There's no create-a-character option, no tank or healer archetype to pick from. Instead, the game gives you three distinct playable characters, each with a completely different combat identity. You play as all three at different points in the story, but how you invest your Abyss Artifacts and which character you lean on for the toughest fights is where the real choice comes in.

The three characters are Kliff Macduff, Damiane, and Oongka. Here's exactly what each one brings to the table and who each is best suited for.

Kliff Macduff: The All-Rounder

Kliff is the main protagonist and the character you'll spend the most time with throughout the story. He's designed to be adaptable, which makes him the most versatile of the three by a significant margin. Kliff can equip swords, shields, bows, polearms, and two-handed weapons, and his skill tree lets you build him in genuinely different directions depending on what you want from the combat.

His kit includes physical attacks, magical abilities, grappling mechanics, and the Blinding Flash skill, which has both combat and exploration applications. You can build Kliff as a mobile skirmisher weaving in and out of range, a shield-focused counter-attacker, or a heavy hitter who leans on two-handed weapons for burst damage. No other character in the game gives you that range of options.

The Watch and Learn mechanic works most prominently through Kliff as well, letting you pick up techniques from enemies and NPCs without spending Abyss Artifacts. This makes his skill variety even broader in practice than what's listed in his tree.

Kliff is the best starting point for almost every player, and he's genuinely strong throughout the whole game rather than just in early content. If you're unsure where to focus, putting your resources into Kliff first is the safe and rewarding choice.

Damiane: The Glass Cannon

Damiane is a completely different experience. She's fast, she hits hard, and she will absolutely punish you for playing sloppy. Her weapon combination of rapier and pistol (with a musket also available) enables a rapid, high-damage style that feels closer to a swashbuckler than a typical fantasy fighter. When she's in rhythm, landing combos with Damiane is one of the most satisfying things in the game.

The catch is her defensive capabilities are low. She can't take hits the way Kliff or Oongka can, which means precision is non-negotiable. You need to be reading enemy attacks, dodging well, and using her agility to stay out of dangerous positions. Players who enjoy the challenge of high-risk, high-reward combat will love her. Players who are still learning the game's timing and mechanics will find her unforgiving.

Damiane shines specifically in fights against humanoid bosses and enemies that don't have massive AOE attacks, because her mobility lets her dance around single-target attacks beautifully. For fights like Lucian Bastier, she's actually the recommended choice. For fights with heavy environmental or AOE hazards, her low durability becomes a liability.

Oongka: The Bruiser

Oongka is the Orc of the group and he plays exactly how he looks. Two-handed axe, devastating AOE attacks, high damage, high sustain, and enough bulk to absorb punishment that would flatten the other two. He's the character you want when you're surrounded by groups of enemies and need to clear a room fast.

His simplicity is part of his appeal. Oongka doesn't require the same level of mechanical finesse as Damiane, and his combat loop is more straightforward than Kliff's multi-weapon variety. If you're someone who prefers aggressive, forward-moving combat without much complexity, Oongka delivers that consistently. He's also specifically recommended for One-Armed Ludvig and certain fights where brute force and sustain are more valuable than mobility.

The tradeoff is that his lower agility means some fights that are easy for Damiane or Kliff become more challenging for him, particularly any boss with fast, tracking attacks that reward dodging over tanking. He's a specialist, not an all-arounder, and knowing when to switch to him is part of getting the most out of his kit.

Which Character Is Best?

There isn't a single objectively best character in Crimson Desert, and the game is designed that way intentionally. Each character has fights where they're the strongest option. That said, if you're looking for a recommendation on where to spend your Abyss Artifacts first and who to build out most thoroughly, Kliff is the answer for most players. His flexibility means your investment in him pays off across every type of content the game throws at you.

Damiane is the character to invest in second if you enjoy her style, particularly because she's genuinely the best option for specific boss fights. Oongka is more situational but valuable to have upgraded for the fights and encounters where his AOE dominance is exactly what you need.

The deeper you get into the game, the more you'll appreciate having all three built up, since certain sections actively favor specific characters and swapping into a well-geared Oongka or Damiane for a tough fight makes a real difference. Unlock them both early through side and faction quests and start investing in them gradually alongside Kliff.
